The firm
A practice built around the person, not the case.
nilamlawxra was established to offer family law counsel of a particular kind — unhurried, discrete, and attentive to the human dimensions of legal proceedings.
← Return HomeOur story
Founded on a different idea of what a law firm should be.
nilamlawxra was established in Singapore in 2009. The founding intention was straightforward: to create a practice where clients in family matters could speak openly, be heard with patience, and receive honest guidance without feeling pressured toward any particular outcome.
Family proceedings touch the most personal parts of a person's life — marriage, children, financial security, and daily routine. A law firm that treats these matters as transactions misses something important. The firm was built to avoid that.
Over the years, the practice has developed a steady reputation in the Family Justice Courts and among mediators working in Singapore. Clients come through personal recommendation, and the firm does not solicit work in ways that the profession's traditions would consider unsuitable.
The name Nilam — meaning sapphire — was chosen as a quiet marker of steadiness and clarity. These remain the qualities the firm tries to bring to each matter it accepts.
Mission
To assist families through legal transitions with care and clarity — ensuring that each client understands their position and that proceedings are handled with proportionate care.
Approach
We prefer agreement over adversarial proceedings where the circumstances allow. We give clients an honest view of the likely outcome before recommending any course of action.
Values
Patience. Honesty. Discretion. The ability to sit with uncertainty and not reach for a premature resolution. These are not especially fashionable qualities in a commercial context; in family law, they matter considerably.
The people
The individuals who lead the firm's work.
Nilam Arjun
Principal, Family Law
Called to the Singapore Bar in 2008, Nilam has practised exclusively in family law since 2009. She has appeared in the Family Justice Courts on divorce, custody, and maintenance matters over several hundred cases.
Rajan Krishnaswamy
Associate, Mediation & Custody
Rajan joined the firm in 2016 and focuses on mediated resolution of custody and maintenance disputes. He holds an accreditation with the Singapore Mediation Centre and brings a considered manner to joint sessions.
Fatimah Tan
Practice Manager
Fatimah manages the firm's administrative matters and client communications. She is often the first point of contact for enquiries and handles matters with the same care the firm extends to its legal work.

The firm's expertise
Family law in Singapore, practised with care.
Family law in Singapore operates under a framework that has been shaped over decades by the Women's Charter, the Guardianship of Infants Act, and the developing body of case law from the Family Justice Courts. A working knowledge of this framework — and of how it is applied day to day — makes a material difference to the quality of advice a solicitor can provide.
nilamlawxra has operated within this framework since 2009. The firm's experience extends across straightforward uncontested divorces, complex ancillary matters involving business assets and multiple properties, and custody arrangements requiring the careful balancing of parental interests and children's welfare. Mediation, collaborative law, and court proceedings are all tools the firm is equipped to use — and part of the firm's role is to recommend the right one for the circumstances at hand.
Singapore's family law system places a high value on resolution by agreement. The courts expect parties to have attempted mediation in most custody and maintenance matters, and a solicitor who understands how that process works in practice — not just in principle — is better placed to prepare and advise a client effectively.
The firm does not take on more work than it can handle with care. This is a deliberate choice that limits the firm's size and its revenue, and it is one the firm makes without apology.
